With Halloween
coming up, this is the time of year that makes horror fans like myself giddy.
For guys like me, who write horror for a living, we live horror year round.
Halloween is a special time, it makes us think about ghosts, ghouls and
monsters. People who have read my books have noticed a lack of monsters, or
what they consider to be monsters. I on the other hand think they are filled
with monsters.
A monster is not just a big creature with
huge claws or big fangs. At least not to me. A monster can be anyone. Pick up
any newspaper or turn on CNN and look at the latest crimes. School teachers
assaulting students. The nice old man next door with a bunch of dead bodies in
his basement. The couple who hacked up their toddler to death and ate the
remains. These are all rea stories I’ve seen in the news in the past year.
So when it comes to writing stories, the
scariest thing to me are real life monsters. I have a lot of road trip stories
and I enjoy writing them because I do a lot of them here in Texas and they all
terrify me. If you’ve ever seen the Hills Have Eyes or Texas Chainsaw Massacre,
parts of Texas actually look like this. Barren wilderness with no people or any
sign of civilization in sight.
This brings me to another point, at times our
environment can be the monster. So imagine being captured by a human monster.
They kill your friends, they torture you in some horrible way. They keep you
locked in a cage or some smelly pit. These are all things that really happen
which makes it terrifying. Now, imagine you escape, but you’re out in the
middle of West Texas.
You get loose and think you’re home free.
Problem is you’re barefoot, the ground is covered with rocks and sticks, it’s
over a hundred degrees and you’re injured and exhausted. Civilization is maybe
five or ten miles away at least which is an eternity on foot. You’re bleeding
and there are mountain lions, snakes and coyotes out there. Oh and not to
mention your captor will be chasing after you soon if he’s not already.
So now you’re battling two monsters and maybe
more since that environment can encompass so many other things within. These
are some of my own biggest fears, besides snakes. I really really hate snakes.
But this is pretty scary too. Whenever we go on a trip to a convention or horror
fest and have to drive through that part of the state, I’m always terrified of
something going wrong and being stuck out there with no cell phone signal.
As we’ve seen, a monster can be so much more
than a scary supernatural creature. We live around monsters each and every day.
What are some things you consider monsters? Each of us has our own version.
Sometimes we can be our own monster, but that’s another post for another day.
